re Eleanor Stark Watts

Eleanor Stark Watts was recently buried at the Germonds Cemetery. Mrs. Watts was my godmother. My middle name is ....Stark. Aunt Eleanor and my mother, Tseng Hwa Chow Hwong, met as college undergraduates at the Columbia University Schooll of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This was quite a duo : the farm girl from Congers with the double pigtails and the Chinese girl from Shanghai. They hit it off right away and remained friends thru their lives. Unfortunately, my mom passed away at age 38. Both women graduated from Columbia Pharmacy in 1945.

Aunt Eleanor commuted almost daily from Congers to NYC...Grand Central Station...and back to Congers. Yep, she got a lot of homework and reading accomplished during these commutes. In a different era and socio-economic condition, I doubt many youngsters from Rockland County...and Congers / New City ...would put up with commuting via public transportation to undergrad studies in NYC. Such are the change in social mores , socio-economics, etc. I note, however, a LOT of adults do this commute ...daily....for years.

Rockland County and Congers was , also, quite different than today's suburban setting. There were , still, many farms in the County. The Watts lived on Aunt Eleanor's parents farm. I recall the address was 300 Congers Road. The house sign read, " 300 Watts." Because of the sign's wording, it was stolen numerous times.

For folks who aren't familiar with farm life, I can tell you a memorable sight at the Watts' home was an HUGE (mostly cow and horse) manure and hay pile. For a youngster in elementary school, this pile ....looked ....like it was 8 feet tall and ran at least 25' - 30' long. Being a typical, self-conscious juvenile, I was embarrassed to tell my friends where I had been on a weekend when my parents and I visited the Watts. H'mmm. How would it sound if I told my friends I was at a person's house where there was an HUGE manure and hay pile ? !!! Of course, TODAY, it would be considered 'classy' to have friends who had enough land to support large animals who contributed to the 'huge manure pile.' Again, such is the change in social attitudes, socio-economics, etc.

There aren't many properties in Rockland County these days that can support enough large , farm animals , etc.

Eleanor Stark Watts ( and my mom) were "ahead of their time" in terms of career vision and professional interest. Good for them !

Today, Pharmacy is "wildly popular' ...particularly for females ....because of its relationship to life sciences , medical science, and it's very portable skills. Women are, also, attracted to Pharmacy because, at the retail level, there is substantial flexibility in terms of work schedule.

Aunt Eleanor and her husband, John, owned and operated Monsey Pharmacy for at least 15 years. They worked part-time for a number of years ...enjoying the 'flexible schedule' this discipline afforded.

Yep, I'm 63 years old now, but I can clearly remember the baked chicken dinners ( chicken crusted with corn flakes ) and mashed potato meals. It was a treat for me since I'm ethnic Chinese and my parents didn't ...never....cook fried or baked chicken.

I'm grateful to God for providing me with my years of knowing Eleanor Stark Watts. Yep, my mom and Aunt Eleanor, a coupla goofy college girls, one from a Rockland County farm and another from the French quarter of Shanghai.
